5 Tips for Keeping Your Flowers Fresh

I remember the first time I brought home a bouquet of fresh flowers. I adored the vibrant colors, but found myself disappointed only a couple of days later when my flowers began to wilt. It turns out, I was so used to all the preservative from grocery store or big box bouquets, that I didn't realize that fresh flowers require a different amount of care! Once I learned a few tips, I was able to enjoy my flowers for much longer!
Here is what I've learned:
1. CLEAN- clean, clean, clean. You need to start with a clean vase or bucket. Hot water and soap is fine, or add a splash of bleach to kill any bacteria in your vessel.
2. REMOVE EXCESS LEAVES- If you're not buying a pre-made bouquet, or if you need to trim stems when you get home, make sure there are no leaves below the water line. Soggy leaves can lead to bacteria that can shorten the life of your flowers.
3. CHANGE YOUR WATER DAILY- Yes, daily! I know, I know, you're thinking "but I have a job! And kids! And a dog! And a mortagage! I don't have time to change the water DAILY!" It may seem like a lot, but I promise, it makes such a difference in the longevity of your flowers!
4. FLOWER FOOD- If you can't change the water daily, you can always find those packets of flower food online, but I like to make my own! I got this recipe from Farm Girl Flowers (https://farmgirlflowers.com/).
Mix together:
-1 gallon clean water
-1/2 Tbs. bleach
-2 Tbs. sugar
-A squeeze of lemon
I usually make a batch to add to arrangements (don't forget to label the bottle!).
5. TRIM YOUR STEMS- Every few days, snip about 3/4" from the bottom of your stems at a diagonal angle. This will help your flowers absorb more water.
Fresh flowers in the house instantly lifts my mood. I hope these tips help you keep you (and your flowers) happier longer!
